Alpha Massaquoi Jr

Alpha Massaquoi Jr. is a Baltimore-based artist who creates captivating charcoal and pastel drawings that explore themes of identity, resilience, and the human experience. Born in Liberia, West Africa, Alpha's artistic journey began with his mother's small charcoal business, where he first encountered the medium.

At fourteen, Alpha and his family immigrated to the United States in search of the "American dream." However, the realities of the 2008 recession and the challenges of racism and colorism presented new obstacles. Despite these difficulties, Alpha's artistic passion persisted. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Towson University and a Master of Fine Arts from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. His charcoal drawings have garnered recognition and have been collected by both private collectors and major institutions.

Alpha's work draws inspiration from Gothic period paintings, emphasizing the figure and its emotional journey through dramatic lighting and contrasting tones. He often depicts individuals whose stories resonate with his own experiences, capturing the complexities of identity and the human condition. Beyond his individual practice, Alpha is committed to uplifting his community. He founded the Hot Sauce Artist Collective, an organization dedicated to supporting artists and bridging the gap between art and the everyday person. He is the curator-in-residence at Riverviews Artspace, and his works have been a part of major group shows in the United States, including Novo Legado & Black Creatives at The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, and major solo shows: Black Noise (Baltimore, MD & Boston, MA), Love Quotes at Daura Museum of Art, and Led by The Holy Spirit. Massaquoi is a winner of the Macon Art Prize, Free Fall Baltimore Grant, Awesome Baltimore Grant, Montague Travel Grant, and The Masc. Independent Artist Award. In 2024, he was a finalist for the AXA Art Prize.
